Events of the social: Portraiture and Collective Agency. African photography from The Walther Collection

02.06.2021 – 22.08.2021

This exhibition presents an extensive selec- tion of works from The Walther Collection, one of the most significant photography and visual art collections of Africa and its dias- pora. It features modern and contemporary photography, along with nineteenth-century vernacular and anthropologic works.

Photography was a key instrument for the reinvention of individual and collective iden- tity since its introduction to the continent in 1854, offering artists and photographers a space for transformation and preservation. Examples of agency derived from this tech- nological expression include disarticulation of the canonical portraiture, radical repre- sentation of bodies and silenced stories of everyday poetics.

Events of the Social brings together collec- tor Artur Walther’s attempt to find the echoes of this story through his collection—a story that has revolved around a dialogue with international photographers, scholars and curators over the past XNUMX years.
