The PLP has been established to provide information about South African and African photography, its photographers and archives. Many historical collections exist outside of the countries where the photographs were originally taken and are housed beyond the borders of the continent. The PLP is creating a portal that will enable engagement with these archives to enable research, enrich education and stimulate curation. This is an ongoing project. Please communicate with us about archives, photographers who you think should be included through our CONTACT form.
Please view the separate searchable databases below for ARCHIVES and PHOTOGRAPHERS.
To visit and then access any link within the archive simply click on any link OR right click and choose either:
“Open Link” OR “Open Link in New Tab“.

Bradlow, Adil | The SAHA Original Photograph Collection | Link | African Media Online | Link | The photographs in this archive are a selection of images I shot during the early years of my career as a journalist. They span from the beginning, as a freelance news photographer on the streets of Cape Town just as a state of emergency was declared in the mid-1980s. Then by 1987 I was on contract with the Associated Press covering the broad range of news stories related to the struggle against Apartheid. After the release of Nelson Mandela and the unbanning of the ANC, and the eventual elections in 1994, I began to travel beyond our borders covering some of the big news events of the period. In 1999 I quit stills and switched to television where I continue to work to this day | Link | SA | |

District Six Museum photographic collection | Link | The Photographic Collection consists of approximately 8,500 photographic prints, 1,000 transparencies, and 4,500 negatives. These images date back to the turn of the century and document the process of the removal itself and the accompanying human tragedy. Included in this collection are a number of smaller collections of works by professional photographers such as George Hallett, Jackie Heyns, Jimi Matthews, Cloete Breytenbach, and Jansje Wissema. The museum also has a collection of more than 1,500 architectural photographs of District Six which were taken in the 1960s and 1970s by Jan Greshoff, Professor of Architecture at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa.
